Beyond the sand

And seas, a great evil stirs. Behold! It’s nothing more than a company of morons come to celebrate, or rather, worship their great deity known otherwise as cohesion, which occurred on the 1st of August, quite some time ago.

I too, had to participate in this horrid ritual or risk having my name being listed for the next requiem. Thankfully, we got to sleep late on the actual date; the event would be taking place at a chalet located near my lair, and it would only start a little after lunch.

Unfortunately for me, though, my role in this fracas was expounded by virtue of the fact that a few rascallions saw me wielding my Nikon around duirng the previous unit cohesion event, and promptly reported such findings to those wielding the chains of power.

Are what most people develop on the playground, during their childhood, perhaps when they meet their first companion of sorts toddering about the swings, or maybe when they get into their first fistfight with the local bully. These skills of ours are honed, of sorts, through the many encounters we are faced with throughout our lives.

It is unfortunate, then, that people tend to delve too deep into such trivial things, wasting resources on billiard tables, bowling alleys, overpriced sustenance, and many more wonderous (and all expensive) things, I am sure. It is for such a purpose that they are unable to enjoy certain luxuries of sorts, and then lament about their fate.

m113I’ve actually managed to ascertain certain aspects of my new vocation in the army, and upon such relevations vast, I think that I can safely determine that, to a large extent, my new job will probably not have me dead from heart failure at the end of it. It may, however, leave me needing prosthetics for just about every organ in my sad excuse of bio-machinery that you might otherwise refer to as a body.

That was not really a joke, in case you were wondering.

My new job essentially entails me the responsibility of taking a 12 ton vehicle and putting it through its tracks hard enough to give even Fernando Alonso a run for his money.

Welcome, year

FireworksYou certainly bring with you good tidings. 2008 is finally upon us, and sinners, repent. You may yet receive the grace of forgiveness, if your luck so happens to favour.

For today, it is a time of celebration. Of what, I’m not exactly sure, but what I am sure of is that every New Year’s Eve, there are fireworks, and like any good fly will tell you, such things are analogous to fly destroyers: they attract humans of every race and intellect level towards their ultimate destruction.

Photographers are no exception in this matter. Which is why, at around 2130 Hours, UTC+8, I found myself walking along the waterfront of The One Fullerton hotel, scouting for adequate vantage points for my trusty D50 to make its quiet, yet bold statement of the year olde.

thumbnail of christmasIs a lie.

There. I said it. And you if even so much as beg to differ, I’ll have you turned into nothing more than a smoked ham faster than you can even think about candy canes.

Speaking of food, honestly speaking, there’s nothing better than a good turkey with the right kind of sauce to go along with it when it comes to fulfilling hunger pangs. It’s too bad then, that my aunt chose to go on a trip to China this year; our family usually heads over to her home, along with my extended relatives during Christmas on the pretext of enjoying each other’s company and reminiscing aud lang syne. In reality, all we want is that turkey.

And ham. Smoked, no less.

So I’ve be...

For the past month or so. It’s decidedly unnerving, not having written any one single thing of significance ever since my last protracted absence. I’m simply getting more and more lazy these days, and my commitment to various events of sorts hasn’t helped matters much at all. I was actually surprised when I saw my site still up, then I remembered that I was using paid hosting now, which makes such inactivity all the more cruel on my soul.

Just one thing before I slip back into the clutches of oblivion, though: I recently acted as photographer for a recent major event (well, as far as events for me go, anyway) which involved inviting a couple of kids over to our school for a 3-day ‘camp’ of sorts, running from early morning to afternoon each day (and into the late night on the last day). These kids aren’t the kind that come from institutions best left to your imagination, but they are the kind that come from families which resemble that of a broken crater, with streams of lava flowing through the cracks, sealing off all passages of hope and reconciliation.

So my skills at using metaphors have atrophied in my absence. Whatever. Anyway, if you know me at all, I’m not the kind who goes all sentimental and teary-eyed at such mention of events (though sometimes I really wonder why I sign up for these kind of things), but essentially I took it as a test of my own ability with photography and Lightroom 1.0′s capabilities. I wasn’t disappointed: it ran absolutely, markedly well on my aging heap of a tablet PC, and in fact, surpassed the performance of the beta on my main workstation. It really is amazing how much efficiency Adobe has managed to squeeze out since the beta versions, although, of course, one cannot rule out the fact that those versions may have been somewhat coded with less attention to efficiency.

See, I’m getting back on the road to using italics, too!
