What I’ve ...

I actually have not listened to the Linkin Park song of the same name, to be honest, even though, rather embarrassingly, I must admit, I do happen to have a few of their offerings in my foobar playlist.

No, this post is literally about what I’ve been working my ass off on for the past few weeks in Digipen.

It’s not a name that conjures up images of fun, laughter or days upon days of staring at 2 computer monitors, sometimes covered with pages of text, sometimes lists of sprites and even artwork. It’s not a name that seems capable of evoking an entire spectrum of emotions, ranging from elation, to amusement and inevitably, frustration. It sounds, well insipid, almost as if it was conceived as an afterthought, without having any real meaning or depth.

It’s also where I’ve been working (well, interning) at, as a junior artist/programmer for the past 7(8?) months. And today was my last day at what has possibly been the best work environment I’ve ever encountered in my life.

Apparel design

Is something that I’m still really kind of new to, despite my previous experience with Zazzle. Most of the time, I was mainly fooling around with bullshit ideas that I really wanted to sketch out in vectors rather than with pen/pencil and paper.

Recently, though, I’ve been in a design rut of late (no thanks to my current stint in the Army), and after receiving some inspiration from several sources, I’ve decided to start again at a steady pace.

So I loaded up Illustrator and got to work. Here’s a small sampling of what I’ve come up with so far.

Are awesome. I’ve been reading on watercolour painting for the past few months, and been working with Corel Painter for a bit before I headed off to the army. As opposed to working with stuff like oils and acrylics, you work from light to dark instead of dark to light, conventionally speaking.

It almost mirrors film and digital photography, where in the former you expose for the blacks and develop for the highlights and the latter vice versa. Really, it’s not that obfuscating once you understand the actual workings behind the smokescreen. Sort of.

These three things have more in common than most people could possibly hope to ever imagine.

That’s not saying much, of course, considering most peoples’ imagination could be compared to that of a black hole. Thank goodness that there are some of us left who do not suffer this disability, this disease that seems to be spreading around the artistic community these days, showing itself to be most prevalent within the Singapore army.

Yes, that was a terribly random statement. That does not make it any less false.

Anyway, I’ve neglected to update as of recent times, owing to the fact that I’ve been working on a couple of projects, some of which are still currently undergoing (I’m quite the busy man here, ain’t I?), some of which have been ongoing since the beginning of time and probably won’t be finished even when the end rolls around and one project which is finally nearing completion.

Anyone who says different is obviously a liar.Tend to be covered with dirt, pieces of grass and the squashed remains of unmentionable creatures. Honestly, what is it about jungles that turn simple, primitive (maybe lovable in some freakish manner) anthropods into mutated monsters?

My Bronco driving course is nearing the end of its lifespan, tomorrow being the final nail in its wholly imaginary coffin. I had to stay in for two days previously, as one particular day’s itenarary had some of us waking up at 0430 hours to pickup a boat from another army compound for our flotation exercise.

Yes, you heard me right. Flotation. Like, on water. Muddy, disgusting, probably bacteria-infested waters. Such things are viewed not as obstacles, oh no. They are merely opportunities.
