What I’ve done

I actually have not listened to the Linkin Park song of the same name, to be honest, even though, rather embarrassingly, I must admit, I do happen to have a few of their offerings in my foobar playlist.

No, this post is literally about what I’ve been working my ass off on for the past few weeks in Digipen.

While I still haven’t had the time to scan in my sketchbooks from my main class, otherwise known as ART101 , I have had the privilege of completing some of my assignments using my now completely outdated, slow, prone-to-overheating and heavy Tablet PC, which, thanks to Wacom, remains one of the few Tablet PCs wonderfully suited to drawing, more so than their Cintiq 12″ offerings. (I am considering their DTF-720 pen display, though, and perhaps selling off my Intuos 4 to earn back some cash for it. That is, if my parents agree to finance it. Maybe after a year or two.)

So, without further ado, here they are, as proof of absolutely no progress whatsoever in my drawing prowess (as I have mentioned before, I believe.)

For Biology class, we were supposed to design a walk cycle for a bipedal character. No other directions were given, and I had about an hour total to actually finish this assignment. You can kind of tell I actually copied the first keyframe to act as the last one.

Another assignment was going to the zoo, drawing various sections of various animals, and then combining them together to form a surreal animal of sorts. This was actually rather interesting, as for me, it became an exercise in what parts of what animals would be easier to render, as I was running out of time to finish my other assignments.

And oddly enough, this is an upcoming WIP for this week’s current biology assignment, in which we are supposed to draw environment scenes in 1, 2 and 3-point perspective. I had some fun with this one with my collection of various speedpainting brushes, even though it didn’t turn out very well.

For Animation class, we had to create a model sheet for a flour sack, and give it emotion. I know the smug and side kick poses aren’t as strong, but I really wanted the side kick one to make it in, and as for the smug one, I couldn’t really be bothered to change it. I might upload some of the animations I’ve done if I can actually remember to grab them off the school servers: we have a Samba server set up, but we’re not allowed access to it off-campus. Perplexing.

So that’s what I’ve been doing thus far. Contrast that with a piece from the portfolio I submitted for admission to Digipen in the first place:

Yes, it’s not really a good comparison with the rest of the stuff I posted, but trust me, once I upload some of the ART101 stuff I’ve been doing, it’ll be pretty clear why I don’t feel my drawing has improved at all.

And now, back to work.
