This is going to be good

A study in primary colour contrasts.I can tell.

Around 2 weeks ago, Father’s Day passed us by. The preceding Friday saw me patrolling the giant shithole that is also known as Sungei Gedong, unenviably assigned to perform the duties of a guard, aimlessly meandering around a military compound at the behest of mindless protocols.

Such is the life of a soldier.

I didn’t get anything for my dad this time, not even making one of my customary oops-I-forgot-here-let-me-cook-something-in-Photoshop-real-quick paintings as per my custom in advance. Why, you ask? Well, I could bullshit about being too tired to do one, too busy, too lazy, but truth be told, I just couldn’t find any inspiration about what to do at all.

I couldn’t bring myself to buy something I knew wouldn’t be right, and I will not do the same thing twice in a row for a gift. That’s just retarded.

Instead, we went out for a nice little dinner in the heart of Singapore’s nightlife district, Orchard Road. As usual, a picture tells more than mere hypertext can ever hope to achieve.

Deciding on what to order for dinner.Perfect for that little heart attack pick-me-up in the morning. At least I think it\'s Teochew. My understanding of dialects is non-existant.These things are the shit. And by that I mean good.

The food was pretty good, which mainly served to remind me of how I wasn’t the one paying for it. In retrospect, I guess I should feel kind of shitty about it, but really, what I’ve been doing for the past few years is conforming to social norms that are required of me. I’ll probably get him something once I can actually find out what he really needs.

Also, I was a little distracted by the prospects of other upcoming events. For example, about my imminent purchase of a certain new toy.

This be expensive shit, dog.

Ok, so I haven’t really owned that many consoles in my life, which is kind of weird, considering I’m usually known among my peers as a complete nerd of sorts.

You know. That guy who spends half his life entertaining himself with sniper fests on awp_map_fair, the guy who organizes scrims for Quake, the guy who failed his exams because he was too busy with DotA, the guy who dishes out big bucks every month just to renew his World of Warcraft subscription.

It surprises some people, then (myself included!) that of the above mentioned titles, I only played one of them with any sort of regularity. Instead, I usually confine myself to certain titles of exquisite selection, preferring instead to enjoy masterpieces that I deem worthy of my time, rather than some nameless game review mouthpiece.

To date, the only home console I’ve had the pleasure of owning would be my still-functional Sega Dreamcast, now a momento of ages past, slowly gathering dust and mites in some dark corner of this residence. And even then, I only went rabid about getting one simply because I wanted to see my childhood hero, Sonic, appear to me in full 640 x 480 on my plasma screen in fully rendered 3D environments.

This era is, however, over. After careful deliberation and a considerable amount of mulling over, it is done.

I am now the owner of a Playstation 3. Along with Meral Gear Solid 4, and Folklore. (GTA IV came one day later after I decided that I wanted to experience it for myself instead of heading over to Chiff’s house and working out the kinks on his 360.)

In a sense, it’s Sonic Adventure all over again. I bought my Dreamcast with the sole intention of fully experiencing the magic of a single title, and now, with my PS3, I’ve done it again, only now, instead of a hedgehog, my favoured protagonist takes the form of a snake.

Oh, sure, Tekken 6 is coming eventually, and so will Final Fantasy XIII along with its Versus counterpart, but Metal Gear Solid is a story almost my entire lifetime in the making, and I wanted to be sure I could enjoy it in the best way possible. This meant, of course, that I would need better hardware.

My new Samsung 24-inch weighs in rather light, but damn is it fucking beautiful. I’ll show pictures of it another time.

You can, of course, imagine that the past week or so that I’ve owned my PS3 has been entirely devoted to exploring its many offerings, but mostly I’ve been immersing myself in MGS4. In fact, the only reason I remembered about updating my site is because I just finished the single-player campaign. I’ll write about it another time, because right now if I think any more about the game, my brain might just explode from processing all the plot twists.

Actually, after looking at a widescreen for the better part of a week, going back to a 17-inch 4:3 screen now seems kind of underwhelming. I guess it’s like going back to a puny Scout after handling a Porsche or something. Of course, that’s not to say I’ve driven either of them.

Well, except in GRID, I guess. The report on that will be arriving soon, I promise. Until then, expect to see me on the Playstation Network a lot more often.

(Also, whoever took the nickname sonictk on PSN and forced me to revert to my alternate, sonictk1989, you suck and I hope you die in a fire. From Hell.

Additionally, I’m not even sure if I registered that nickname myself when I used my PSP’s various online features.)
