The Gallery is now live

It is Team Fortress 2Like, for real this time. Seriously. When have I ever lied to anyone? I mean, in this paragraph?

Lame Portal puns aside, after painstakingly spending an afternoon re-learning my already limited PHP knowledge, I also had to fuddle around with the WordPress documentation, which, while admittedly written in a decent manner, didn’t exactly lend itself well to catering to one who might actually be interested in actually using WordPress to control a site instead of a mere blog.

I guess you could also say that I suck at PHP, which could actually be a real possibility, considering my math preliminary examinations didn’t exactly have smilies all over the paper when it was actually returned to me. In fact, one could say that there were frownies as much as there was a big, fat “fail” written all over it.

I will talk about exams some other time, though. For now, though, I will focus on the more pressing issues of life.

Firstly, with the implementation of the gallery, there are bound to be a few bugs here and there. I think I’ve successfully managed to implement everything I wanted to so far except for the front page, amazingly without turning the source code of the site into tag soup, so I guess that’s sort of an achievement in itself. Expect a plethora of new imagery to find their way into the database soon though; I’m really liking the new minimal Gallery PHP script that I’m using, though customizing it to fit into the site template was a real bitch. And I know it doesn’t exactly have the oh-so-pretty features of things like gallery2 or simpleviewer, but I was specifically looking for something non-Javascript/Flash/whatever-based, as I actually disable Javascript on practically every site I visit, including my own.

Besides, I fucking hate that shit when it comes to personal portfolio sites. It’s too damn difficult to implement properly, have it degrade gracefully for non-compatible browsers, and how the fuck are you supposed to bookmark a section that you like, especially if it’s Flash-based?

Also: I’m not really sure exactly what I want on the front page at this point. I know a lot of sites usually do away with such ‘Welcome’ atrocities, but I’m of the opinion that going right to a site and immediately being directed to the author’s thoughts and rants is kind of, well, jarring, so to speak, and ruins the user experience. I mean, if I was a seasoned user of the site, I’d bookmark the goddamn blog page if I wanted to see it immediately, right?

Finally, for those of you who actually know what the picture is about, yes. I have learned from my early days of Team Fortress 2, an analogy to how I have learned from past promises of new gallery systems, promises that were made, then broken, and finally, today, fulfilled.

It’s almost enough to bring a grown man to tears. It’s a good thing I’m still a kid.

Be back soon.
